In 2009, Active4Youth revived its first program, the Elementary Cross Country Program. It was met with incredible success, with almost 3,000 participants. Free to participants, it was offered at all 34 Spokane elementary schools.
Practices occur at each school site from 3:00 – 4:15PM at least three times per week for approximately seven weeks. Schools are assigned to a zone and over the course of the program, student athletes are bused to designated parks where they race against student athletes from other schools in their zone. The races are gender and grade specific, meaning second grade boys race solely against second grade boys. Top ten finishers at the zone meets qualify to race at the Bloomsday All City Cross Country Meet, held at Comstock Park.
Active4Youth is set to offer the Program again in 2010, with the generous support of the Inland Northwest Community Foundation, Saucony Run For Good, Bloomsday, Rotary 21, and a variety of other local contributors. Start Date: Sept. 13, 2010
Zone Meets: The first Zone Meet is the week of September 17, 2010. The second Zone Meet is the week of October 4, 2010
All City: October 19, 201
The cross country program is made available by many generous donors who committed both time and financial resources to make this happen. We thank you.
Special thanks is given to two key organizations to which we are deeply indebted, as this program wouldn’t be here without their support, the Inland Northwest Community Foundation via a grant made possible by the Leuthold Endowment Fund and the Charlotte Martin Foundation.
As your Community Foundation, Inland Northwest Community Foundation has awarded more than $34 million in grants and scholarships throughout its 20-county region since 1974. Our mission is to foster vibrant and sustainable communities in the Inland Northwest. We accomplish this by awarding grants to nonprofit organizations in order to enrich education, arts & culture, provide critical human services, promote economic and community development and to support our environment. We work with individuals, families and businesses to provide charitable benefits for our region. Currently, we manage 262 funds with assets of $50 million (as of July 31, 2009).
The Charlotte Martin foundation, based in Seattle, was established in 1987. Since its inception, over $15 million has been awarded, primarily in the Pacific Northwest, in four program areas: Youth-focused athletics, culture, education and wildlife and habitat preservation.
The Saucony Run For Goodsm Foundation was established to help combat childhood obesity by providing financial support to community-based youth running programs.
Bloomsday is proud to be the Title Sponsor of the Bloomsday All-City Elementary Cross Country Meet. Since 1987, the Lilac Bloomsday Association has had a major impact on Spokane's youngsters through its "Fit For Bloomsday" program. The "Fit for Bloomsday" program encourages children to become fit and healthy through running, jogging and walking, with nearly 6,000 youngsters participating annually. Sponsoring the All-City Meet is a natural extension of Bloomsday's mission, which includes promoting fitness education for the civic betterment, social improvement, and physical well-being of the general public.
Brooks is dedicated to inspiring people to run and be active, and this mission extends to its corporate giving program, Run B’cause. Thank you to Brooks for generously providing your support to the Top 5 Finishers of the Bloomsday All City Cross Country.
Since 1911, Spokane's Rotary Club 21 has advanced the ideals of service, understanding, goodwill, and peace, locally and internationally, through our 340+ business and civic leaders. Please accept our invitation to learn more about Club 21.
Cricket is committed to partnering with several non-profits in the Spokane community. We are very excited to support Active4Youth with such a worthwhile endeavor. Keeping kids active and healthy is important to their overall well-being and the vitality of our future leaders. The Spokane Cricket team salutes the Active4Youth organization and congratulates them on their success!

Press Release: Spokane Public Schools
The Bloomsday All-City Cross Country Meet will be held Monday, October 12th at 4:30 pm at Comstock Park on Spokane’s South Hill. 700 students are expected to participate.
In association with Spokane Public Schools, Active4Youth is excited to announce that it has revived the Elementary Cross Country Program. The Program started with a bang on September 8, 2009 and is being offered in all 34 of the District’s elementary schools. The sites are averaging almost 90 participants, with some schools reporting between 120-150 students. “This is a testament to the need for this program,” said Dan Farley, the fitness and health teacher at Finch Elementary and the Audubon Park Zone Leader.
This program was offered through the District several years ago but had to be cut due to budget issues within the District. Active4Youth Founder Mike Bresson had this to say: “The District blessed Spokane with a wonderful assortment of afterschool programs for many years, which included the cross country program. We were truly lucky. And it was hard to learn that the afterschool programs were being cut. That was a hard reality. But now it is our turn to support the district; it’s our turn to provide for the kids in our community and this is a great opportunity for everyone involved!”
Practices are held after school for one hour at least three days per week. The schools are separated into zones, which compete against each other in two regional zone meets. Students will race against others in their same grade and those meeting a certain time threshold or placing in their respective grade race will qualify to race in the Active4Youth All-City Cross Country Meet.
Students interested in participating need to contact their school administrators. Parents who want to volunteer at their child’s school also need to check with school officials before joining. Please contact us for more information or call Mike Bresson at 868-6201.
